Trying New Things: Candle Making and Vocal Lessons

CANDLE MAKING CLASS

As you might know, one of my New Year’s Resolutions is to take an unexpected workshop or class. So before the freshness of the new year wore off I decided to cross off one of my resolutions. I booked for my mom and me to attend a candle making class at a studio called KSM Candle Co. in Baltimore, MD. When we arrived we were greeted by another mother-daughter duo that both owned the studio and taught the class. There were candles burning and soft jazz playing, my exact vibe pretty much 24/7.

We found seats, waited for the class to begin and inspected the supplies that were laid out in front of us. I’ve got to say this was one of the most aesthetic places I’ve ever been to. They’d created a focal wall with the name of the store, all the jars of scents, and chalkboard signs detailing the candle making process. It screamed to be photographed and plastered all over Instagram.

For the next hour and a half, we created our own custom candles: picking out the scents, melting down the wax, stirring the scent into the wax, pouring the wax into the jar, and waiting for it to solidify. All during this time we mingled with our table mates and just enjoyed each other’s company. Both my mom and I created 3 scent blend candles. Mine consisted of orange, sandalwood, and grapefruit, while my mom’s was bergamot patchouli, orange, and lemongrass.

I truly enjoyed my time and would recommend it to anyone who is a candle lover. I’d even consider hosting an event there (like a birthday or reunion) and renting out the entire space. I’m so happy that I was able to experience this with my mom as well and it turned out to be a great day date.

VOCAL LESSONS

All during my childhood, I was involved in activities where singing was involved. Musicals and chorus were the most obvious but also as a dancer I would commonly sing along to the music to help me remember choreography. Ever since graduating from high school, I’ve neglected my love for singing in the pursuit of other passions. So as 2020 began I decided to pick back up one of my longest passions and start vocal lessons.

I started lessons in late January at the Baltimore School of Music and I took lessons for a month. I really enjoyed my time there and the only reason why I stopped taking lessons is because of the inconvenient date/time of the lessons. I would definitely take lessons again in the future and it for sure lit a fire in me to continue pursuing music.

So in the past few months, I’ve been able to really step out of my comfort zone and try some new things, both of which I truly enjoyed. I challenge everyone reading this to find a couple of things that they love doing but have put on the back burner, and find a way to pursue it. Whether that’s an in-person class, online workshop, or simply trying it again on your own time (no matter your level of proficiency). Let me know down below what new (or not so new) hobby you plan to pick up and hopefully this post serves as inspiration for you. Thanks for supporting my blog!
