Life Update: What I've Been Up To

Hey! I know, long time no talk, but there’s been a lot going on. First off, I’m so happy you’re reading this and I appreciate any time you spend reading through my musings. I’ve taken an absence from my blog for 1.5 years and during that time, a lot has changed.

Starting a Business

Last year, I started a small business called Kove Candle Co where I make coconut wax luxury candles. If you're a long-time reader of my blog, you might remember a blog post I did at the beginning of 2020 detailing a candle-making workshop that my mom and I attended at Knit, Soy, and Metal in Baltimore, MD. This was when the idea first sparked in my brain. As months passed, I really got the itch to create a handmade business from scratch. After months of planning, testing, and designing, I opened Kove Candle Co on October 2nd, 2021. Initially, I sold exclusively on Etsy and then in April, I launched my own website at KoveCandle.Co

Getting a New Job

Around March 2022, I began the hunt for a new job. I’d been in my previous role for coming up on 4 years and I was itching for a change. I’d realized that a job that worked for me as a new college graduate, no longer fit what I wanted for my life and career as a then 25-year-old. I was offered my previous job in August of 2018 after interviewing for a new role. I’d heard of the company through a family friend that went to my church and although it wasn’t exactly what I would have chosen, it still would be a great chance at gaining experience and growing in my career. Over the years, I grew and moved into roles that better fit my interests but the one thing that would never change is the industry, digital healthcare. I’ve never been interested in the field but experience is experience, so I persevered for almost 4 years. In early 2022, the urge to change industries grew large enough to start looking for other opportunities.

Now looking for a new job as a Graphic Designer isn’t as easy as other fields. Before you even begin searching, you have the update your portfolio (a website with relevant work examples) which can either be a quick undertaking or if you’re like me, can take 2-3 months. I finished my portfolio in early April and began applying to new jobs in (spoiler alert) New York City. Within a month, I’d been offered a new job in the fashion industry and I was on my way to moving and starting a new life in New York City!

Moving to New York City

In case you didn’t know, I officially live in New York City! I moved here in early June and since then I’ve been settling into life with a new job, in a new city, and with a new community of people around me. Moving to NYC has been a goal of mine for 3+ years and I always viewed it as a bucket list item. Something that might not be where I build my life long term, but something that if I never took the leap of faith I’d regret massively. So now I’m here and taking advantage of all the city has to offer!

So that’s what I’ve been up to in the past year! Thanks so much for supporting my blog!
